What is your favorite fairytale, and why?
My very favorite of all the classic Faerytales is Rumplestiltskin. I'm not really sure why it's my favortie...probably just the physical elements of the tale...and that the antagonist is so devious, but in the end, his manipulation is for not and he gets what was coming to him.
Probably the one thing I take issue with in the story is that she ends up marrying the king. The king in the original tale was cold and greedy and cruel. He threated to kill her unless she provided him with the straw-turned-gold, but oh, she manages that so he marries her. I know Faerytales don't go terribly in-depth with the personalities of the characters, as most are very short, but the maiden was described as kind, selfless and loving, and I do not think she would have wanted to marry a man like that. But I suppose in those days, you would not reject such an offer. It usually proved fatal.
Some of my other favorites include Tiny Thumbelina, Snow White & Rose Red, The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, The Snow Queen, The Shoe Maker and the Elves, The Frog Prince, The King of the Golden Mountain, The Three Spinning Faeries, Hansel and Gretel, The Marsh Kings Daughter, The Princess and the Pea, The Last Dream of the Old Oak, The Ice Maiden, The Enchanted Stag, and The Man in the Bears Skin.
